Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can you use a saltwater fly rod in freshwater?

Light tackle saltwater rods can be used in freshwater, but you would not want to use a freshwater rod in a saltwater environment because freshwater rods and fishing gear may not be made with the corrosion-resistant guides or components that saltwater rods are.

2. Can you lake fish with fly rod?

Fly Fishing Tackle for Lake Trout For spring and fall a floating, intermediate or sink tip line will work well. Whichever you can cast better will work best. Lakers tend to like a faster strip so the longer your cast the longer your fly will be in the water.

3. What size fly rod for Lake fishing?

Virtually all fly fishing guides agree that a 9' rod for 5-weight line is the most versatile trout rod in the world. If you're likely to fish a mix of lakes, creeks and rivers, a 9' 5-weight is a no brainer first rod. If you have no idea where you are going to fish, buy a 9' 5-weight.

4. What weight fly rod for lakes?

The best all-around fly rod for freshwater fly fishing is a 5-weight. A 5-weight fly rod offers the most versatility for everything from panfish, bass and small salmon. A 5-weight is also great as a “back-up” fly rod once you grow as a fly fisher.
