Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is the proper way to cast a fly rod?

Hold the rod out in front of you and make sure the line is untangled. Bring the rod tip back, letting a small amount of line hang loosely in a D-loop behind your casting shoulder. Move the rod forward slowly and smoothly, speeding up steadily. Stop when the rod tip is just past vertical and watch the loop unroll.

2. Can you use flies on a casting rod?

Yes. It is possible to use a spinning rod or bait casting rod to cast flies if you add lead weights or a casting bubble. However, the action and length of regular fishing rods is not designed to properly cast unweighted flies very far, even if used with fly fishing line.

3. What weight fly rod is easiest to cast?

Small Trout Streamers For more traditional trout streamers (think woolly buggers) that you may cast on a floating or slow sinking line we would recommend a 9' 5wt or 6wt. The lighter weight will make it easier to fish lighter line on and will present more delicately.

4. What fly rod is best for roll casting?

Medium Action fly rods bend in the middle and thus are the best roll casting fly rods. They also are the best mending fly rods.
