It is similar to tequila but has a distinct smoky flavour due to the production process, which involves roasting the agave hearts in underground pits before fermentation. Mezcal is often consumed neat and sipped slowly to appreciate its complex flavour profile. It has gained popularity in recent years as a premium spirit and is now widely available in bars and liquor stores around the world. Mezcal is a unique and enjoyable alternative to other spirits and is definitely worth trying for those looking for something different.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is difference between tequila and mezcal?

Tequila is a type of mezcal, much like how scotch and bourbon are types of whiskey. According to spirits writer John McEvoy, mezcal is defined as any agave-based liquor. This includes tequila, which is made in specific regions of Mexico and must be made from only blue agave (agave tequilana).

2. Is mezcal stronger than tequila?

No, not necessarily. It just has a reputation as one of the stronger spirits. Many people find that the taste of mezcal is usually stronger than that of tequila, but that's another matter. Tequila and mezcal are both in the range of about 38% to 55% ABV (Alcohol by Volume), which is 76-110 proof.

3. Does mezcal taste like tequila?

They have different flavors On the most basic level, tequila tends to have a smooth, sweet flavor, whereas mezcal is often described as savory and smoky. The smoky quality is usually attributed to the underground ovens used to cook the agave.

4. Is mezcal a hallucinogen?

Because mezcal sounds like mescaline, the psychedelic drug, it's surely hallucinogenic. Furthermore, it comes from the Mexican state of Oaxaca, where counterculture folk go to munch on magic mushrooms. This, of course, is calumny. Like tequila, mezcal is a liquor distilled from the heart of the agave plant.
