Absinthe is a highly aromatic and potent spirit that has been enjoyed by connoisseurs for centuries. It is made from a blend of botanicals, including wormwood, anise, and fennel, which give it a unique and complex flavour profile. Absinthe is traditionally served by dripping ice-cold water over a sugar cube placed on a slotted spoon, which causes the drink to louche or turn cloudy. While it was once banned in many countries due to its alleged hallucinogenic properties, modern absinthe is legal and widely available. It is a must-try for anyone who appreciates complex and flavourful spirits.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is absinthe and why was it banned?

Years before the 18th Amendment, best known as Prohibition was ratified in the U.S. in 1919 this often misunderstood green spirit – Absinthe, La Fee verte or The Green Lady – was banned in 1912. The Absinthe ban was based on a belief that the green liquid inside the bottle was hallucinogenic.

2. Why is absinthe illegal in America?

The 18th Amendment, better known as Prohibition, was ratified in the United States in 1919. Absinthe, La Fee verte, or The Green Fairy, was however banned in 1912 because it was believed that the green spirit contained in the bottles was hallucinogenic and dangerous.

3. Can you drink absinthe straight?

Drinking absinthe straight is not recommended because the green distilled spirit has a powerful flavor and high alcohol content. Beyond the potential of burning your taste buds, absinthe is so strong that it can be dangerous if you drink too much.

4. Can absinthe make you drunk?

The drink is known for its high alcoholic content—that's why it's considered a high-proof herbal liquor. Because of that, absinthe will get you drunk quickly if you don't dilute it. According to HowStuffWorks, the drink consists of 55 to 75 percent alcohol, making it a 110- to 140-proof drink.
