Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How do you plant Lathyrus seeds?

Propagated easily by seed. Annuals can be sown in a cold frame in early autumn or in early spring or in-situ (where they are to flower) in May. Sow perennials into pots in a cold frame in spring for planting out in autumn. If necessary, soak seed overnight before sowing, to hasten propagation.

2. Is Lathyrus invasive?

Lathyrus odoratus is noted to be invasive in New Zealand and possibly in the Dominican Republic (CABI). This species has naturalized in California but no information was available about it being invasive.

3. How do you plant Lathyrus vernus from seed?

Seeds can be sown at any time but are best sown in winter or early spring to benefit from a cold spell in the wet compost to break their dormancy. We advise covering seeds very thinly with sand or fine grit to about the depth of the seed size.
