Metal choke collars are a type of dog collar designed to provide greater control over a dog during training or walking. These collars are made of metal links that can be tightened or loosened depending on the level of control required. They are often used by dog trainers and handlers to teach dogs to walk on a leash without pulling, and to discourage unwanted behaviours. While some people may find them controversial, when used correctly and under the advice of a professional, metal choke collars can be an effective tool for training dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Are metal prong collars cruel?

Myth: A prong collar isn't inhumane if it fits right. Fact: Sadly, this is a false statement that's been perpetuated by aversive trainers. Even properly fitted prong collars dig into the sensitive skin around the neck, risking severe damage to the thyroid, esophagus, and trachea.

2. Are choker collars cruel?

Choke and prong collars are designed to punish dogs for pulling by inflicting pain and discomfort. They can cause serious physical and emotional damage to dogs and should never be used.

3. Are metal collars good for dogs?

Another issue is many pet parents don't know how to properly use a prong collar. Improper use of a prong collar can seriously damage your pup's trachea and delicate neck skin. Furthermore, prong collars may be perceived by the dog as punishment and cause emotional and behavioral issues later on.

4. Do metal collars hurt dogs?

Pronged collars have a series of fang-shaped metal links, or prongs, with blunted points which pinch the loose skin on a dog's neck when pulled. These collars are considered harmful as they are used to correct unwanted behaviour through inflicting pain as punishment.
