Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Are lace valances out of style?

Lace curtains have gone in and out of popularity throughout the years. Lace is undeniably elegant, yet curtains made from the fabric are not always the best fit in a modern home. In addition to potential style concerns, lace is notoriously delicate.

2. What was the lace curtain?

The "lace curtain Irish" were those who were well off, while the "shanty Irish" were the poor, who were presumed to live in shanties, or roughly-built cabins. ... As lace curtains became commonplace in Irish-American working-class homes, "lace curtain" was still used in a metaphorical, and often pejorative, sense.

3. What is the point of valances?

One of a valance's primary functions is to cover up hardware, curtain rods, and anything else at the top of a window you might want to adorn. A valance gives a continuous look and feel to any window covering. They can even tie together different window coverings in the same room.
