Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Should you put a tarp over your tent?

Can You Put a Tarp Over a Tent? The short, sweet answer: Yes! Attaching a tarp above the tent, either mounted on poles or tied to trees, provides additional protection form rain, falling debris, and other elements that can make your camping experience uncomfortable.

2. How thick should a tarp be under a tent?

How Thick Should A Tarp Be Under A Tent? There's no minimum thickness for ground cloths, however, anything thicker than about 2mm should be sufficient. Do keep in mind, though, that the thicker your tarp, the heavier and bulkier it is in your pack.

3. What is mil tarp camping?

For general use, such as covering items, look for a lightweight blue tarp that has a thickness of at least 5 mils. If you're using the tarp for transporting goods or covering machines and equipment, you should look for a heavy-duty tarp with at least 23 mils of thickness.

4. How big should a tarp be for camping?

Camping experts recommend a 9×9 square tarp which can be used to create a variety of shelters for one person. An 8×10 tarp would provide ample coverage for a single hammock.
