Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What cable is used for RS232?

You will probably recognize the standard 9 pin DB9 cable. Simply put, a RS232 connection transmits signals using a positive voltage for a binary 0 and a negative voltage for a binary 1.

2. How many types of serial cables are there?

The RS-232 specification defines two types of serial devices, DTE and DCE. DTE normally refers to the serial port on a PC or terminal, while DCE refers to a modem or other type of communications device.

3. Can you splice a serial cable?

You can cut and splice your own universal serial bus, or USB, cables to meet the length and connector type that you require. The process requires only a wire cutter and electrical tape, though cable quality can be increased using a soldering iron and heat shrink tubing.

4. How many wires are in a serial cable?

The RS-232 Standard Although RS-232 does not specify connector configurations, two have become de facto standards: DB25 (a 25-pin connector, in which usually no more than 10 wires are used), and DB-9 (a 9-pin connector, in which usually all 9 wires are used).
