Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How heavy should a backpacking chair be?

We recommend staying under two pounds for a backpacking chair (though we did test the 3.6-lb Helinox Chair One XL as an option for larger hikers). Anything heavier than that and the weight penalty begins to, well, outweigh the benefits.

2. What do you sit on while backpacking?

Basically, a sitting pad is an ultra-lightweight piece of camping gear you can use as a seat and a buffer between you and the ground. Of course it also comes in handy when you're taking a rest break while hiking and don't want to sit on the wet ground.

3. Do I need a backpacking chair?

A backpack chair is considered an optional piece of hiking gear. ... To get a complete picture of why you might want to carry a backpacking chair into the wilds, let's take a look at not only the benefits, but the various types of lightweight outdoor chairs that are available to you.

4. What is a backpacking chair?

Ultralight and compact backpacking chair: REI Flexlite Air. Supportive chair with an exceptionally stable build: Big Agnes Skyline UL. Ultralight inflatable sit pad that doubles as a pillow: REI Co-op Flash Sit Pad. Chair kit that uses your inflatable sleeping pad to provide cushion & back support: Therm-a-Rest Trekker.
