Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What kind of wood is used for cajons?

Cajon builders generally recommend harder, denser solid hardwood - wenge, padouk, walnut, oak, maple etc. However, it's not a hard and fast rule, I've successfully used Sitka spruce, western red cedar and redwood, all considered tone woods.

2. What are cajons made of?

Nowadays, cajons are mostly around 48 x 30 x 30 cm in size and primarily made of birch or beech plywood, while some high end models are made of solid wood.

3. Are there different types of cajons?

There are 2 types of snares, for 3 types of cajons: Peruvian cajons – which have no snare and are the original instrument, just a wooden box. Flamenco cajons – which use guitar strings as snare. Snare cajons – which use real drum snares.

4. Are cajons good?

Its uniqueness does not end in its rounded design; the cajon is built to sound like a traditional drum and has a good sonic range. Don't be surprised – the feature is possible since the soundboard is made of tonewood. Another unique feature of this cajon is the clean separation of notes.
