Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can you use a trumpet mouthpiece on a cornet?

For example a cornet mouthpiece will not fit in a trumpet / a trumpet mouthpiece will not fit in a cornet / medium and medium large trombones require small shank mouthpieces while large bore trombones will use large shank mouthpieces!

2. What is the difference in cornet mouthpieces?

British cornet mouthpieces typically have a deeper, more V sped cup, producing a broader, darker, warmer sound. They are popular for British brass band and similar ensembles. The current Gen 2 Wedge cornet rims are named according to the inner diameter (ID) of the rim measured in the long, vertical axis at a depth of .

3. Are cornet and trumpet mouthpieces the same?

The two instruments also have different mouthpieces, although it is harder to notice this difference merely by looking at the two instruments. The trumpet is the only brass instrument to use a shallow, bowl shaped mouthpiece, whereas the cornet's mouthpiece is deeper and v-shaped.

4. Is cornet harder to play than trumpet?

The trumpet and the Bb cornet are the same pitch and feature the same fingerings but the cornet is easier for younger students to play. Cornets have tighter tubing (remember the four 180-degree turns), which makes it smaller and easier to hold. It is also easier to hold and find pitches on the cornet.
