Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. How many mm should brake rotors be?

Disc brake rotors usually last so long that many people treat them as 'fit and forget' components. However, manufacturers provide minimum thicknesses for their rotors. Shimano recommends that its rotors, which start out 1.8mm thick, should be replaced when the braking surface has been reduced to 1.5mm.

2. How thick should bike disc brakes be?

Generally, the pad material should measure at least 1mm thick. By stacking 3 business cards you can create a makeshift feeler gauge that is approximately 1mm. Check with the pad manufacturer for exact wear specifications, and use a caliper for accurate measurements.

3. Are all bike brakes Universal?

Bike brake pads, on the whole, are universal; the main difference is the compound they are made of. Some have soft non-metallic compounds whereas others feature hard metallic compounds. There are also some variations in size and diameter of the pads but this doesn't make much difference.

4. How thick are new Shimano brakes?

Brake pads wear thin with use. Most manufacturers list specifications for minimum pad thickness. For Shimano® pads, replace when pad material (not including pad holder) is less then 0.9mm thick. Inspect old pads when removing.
