Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Is there a real BB-8?

The most sophisticated BB-8 was actually the one designed for red carpet appearances, because it couldn't cut corners and rely on movie magic to make up the difference. The basics are the same as we've seen in other BB-8 designs: a rolling motor inside the ball with a magnet rod for moving the head around on the body.

2. What does the BB in BB-8 stand for?

In an interview from a few months ago J.J. Abrams revealed that he came up with the idea of BB-8's name himself. He stated that he picked it because of the droid's round and bouncy look: I named him BB-8 because it was almost onomatopoeia. It was sort of how he looked to me, with the 8, obviously, and then the two B's.

3. Why is BB-8 so important?

BB-8 helped both Poe and Rey as the Resistance rebuilt itself after Crait – only to face terrible new threats in the resurrected Emperor Palpatine and his Sith armada. On a mission to Pasaana, BB-8 made a new friend – D-O, a shy little droid who'd been mistreated by his master.

4. Why is BB-8 the best?

BB-8 has a much larger range of motion Their lack of mobility limits narrative pacing and means they can't feature in any chase scenes. Boring. BB-8, however, has a spherical structure that rotates in any way he chooses. He's so fast he can even keep up with his human counterparts.
