Te Mata Coleraine is New Zealand's most famous red wine, and is widely regarded as New Zealand's best red wine. Decanter Magazine's New Zealand Judge MW Bob Campbell named Coleraine his 'Favourite Wine of 2015', saying of it: ‘When Coleraine was first made in 1982, it was light years ahead of any New Zealand red wine produced before that date. It has since become the country's most iconic wine label.' Recently Matthew Jukes of Moneyweek described Coleraine as ‘the beating heart of Hawke's Bay in vinous form. Not just one of New Zealand's greatest Bordeaux blends (I happen to think it's in the No.1 spot) but one of the world's elite versions too.'
Coleraine has a deep crimson colour with intense aromas of blackberry syrup, espresso, marzipan, and dried roses. The palate has a concentrated core of perfectly ripe blackcurrants, with layers of damson plums and chocolate leading to long, powerful, tannins and refreshing acidity. The blend is 72% cabernet sauvignon, 22% merlot, and 6% cabernet franc.
