However, as it is distilled in a Coffey still rather than a pot still it is not categorised as ‘single malt whisky' but as a ‘grain whisky'. This unique production method results in extraordinary flavours and texture.

THE FATHER OF JAPANESE WHISKY – Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, who is often referred to as “The Father of Japanese Whisky”. Taketsuru travelled to Scotland in 1918 to learn the art of whisky-making. Returning to Japan in 1920 with his new Scottish wife Rita, Taketsuru also brought back traditional Scotch production techniques which he blended with Japanese precision and attention to detail to create Nikka.

NIKKA'S COFFEY DISTILLATION - Nikka Coffey Grain is distilled in a Coffey still, a rare still patented by Aeneas Coffey in the 1830s which Taketsuru learned to use whilst in Scotland in early 1900s. A Coffey still is challenging to use but produces a spirit of quality and texture that is rarely seen in grain whiskies today.

ENJOY NEAT OR IN A MIXED DRINK – Nikka Coffey Malt is best enjoyed neat but it can also be mixed into cocktails like an Espresso Martini, Manhattan or topped up with soda for a Highball.
