If you have ever visited a traditional Japanese ryokan (inn), then you will recognise the scent of igusa (rush grass). It is a distinct and pleasant grassy herbal fragrance, which is said to promote relaxation and is used as a natural air-freshener in Japan.

This 100 x 210 cm tatami sleeping mat is made in Japan from sustainably grown Japanese igusa straw (rush).

The natural fragrance will gradually subside as the mat ages, but the igusa's air purifying and humidity regulating qualities will remain.

The mat is firm without being hard and the igusa straw surface is pleasant to touch. When using it as a sleeping mat, we recommend using it with a futon on top.

This mat has a woven motive of Sakura (cherry blossom) and Mount Fuji, and it combines these gentle colours with the natural colour of igusa. Almost like doing your yoga as the sun rises over the Pacific.
