Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. Can xylophones be made of metal?

The main difference between a xylophone and the glockenspiel/metallophone is the material used for the bars; the xylophone uses wood whereas the glockenspiel and metallophone use metal.

2. What are metal xylophones called?

The glockenspiel (German pronunciation: [ˈɡlɔkənˌʃpiːl] or [ˈɡlɔkŋ̍ˌʃpiːl], Glocken: bells and Spiel: set) or bells is a percussion instrument. It consists of pitched aluminum or steel bars arranged in a keyboard layout. This makes the glockenspiel a type of metallophone, similar to the vibraphone.

3. What are the two types of xylophones?

And so these 2 categories are: Student Xylophones – which generally don't go above 3.0 octaves, don't have resonators nor a stand. Professional Xylophones – which use higher quality wood for the tone plates, have resonators and an adjustable height.
