Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What are telescopes mounted in?

There are two major types of mounts for astronomical telescopes: Altazimuth and Equatorial. Altazimuth (sometimes called alt-az) is the simplest type of mount with two motions, altitude (vertical) and azimuth (horizontal): thus the name Altazimuth.

2. Which telescope mount is best?

3. How do telescope mounts work?

An equatorial mount works by having one axis – known as the polar or RA axis – aligned with Earth's rotational axis, and therefore the rotation of the celestial sphere. You can achieve this by using a small instrument called a polarscope, which sits inside the mount along the polar axis.
