Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What are square nuts called?

Most common are hex and square nuts, which are also called full nuts. Square nuts are frequently known as pressed nuts as they are pressed out of sheet metal - usually zinc plated steel or stainless steel.

2. Why did we stop using square nuts?

Square steel nuts were common on machinery of the late 19th through mid 20th century. Today hex nuts have displaced them. One reason is that a hex nut offers a new wrenching access at every 60°, whereas a square nut offers one only at every 90°.

3. When did nuts change from square to hexagon?

NUTS & BOLTS I believed the square nuts were replaced by the hexagonal about 1900 – Wrong! The hex head was developed as far back as the very early 1830's (James Nasmith) , and the square continued mainly in the production of agricultural implements.

4. Do they still make square nuts?

Square head bolts were standard for line pole work until recently, and square nuts are still standard (required by building code in some cases) for concrete foundation work where they will be tightened up by hand wrenches.
