Brass — When it comes to metal snare drums, few alloys are more prized than brass. It's warm when feathered, bright and aggressive when pummeled, and extremely articulate when fed ghost notes. Steel — What brass has on sensitivity, steel snares have on attitude.
Something like a thick stave shell or cast bronze or steel will be loud. Even so, if you're mic'd, having a 'loud' snare becomes irrelevant and it all comes down to tone instead.
MAPLE. Maple is one of the most popular woods used for high quality snare shells. Maple is known for its warm tone and has enhanced lower frequencies and an even distribution of middle and high frequencies. The sound is clear and supports a wide tuning range making for a good general-purpose snare.
