Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What type of brushes are best for oil painting?

In oil painting, large bristle brushes are best for washes and the broad areas of backgrounds. Mid-size bristle brushes with sharp edges can also be used for some detail. Finer details are best accomplished with small, round, sable brushes.

2. What paint brushes are best for beginners?

A bright brush is also a flat brush but the bristles are shorter. These are great brushes for beginners because they are easier to control. You can get a bright brush in different sizes and often they are labeled with a number like “#4 bright”, “#12 bright”, etc.

3. What size brushes for oil painting?

When starting a painting, you'll typically begin with large areas and will need to use a ½” wide (or larger) bristle hair brush. Most of your painting can be done with a bristle hair brush. However, when you're ready to add in finer details, you'll want to switch over to a sable brush that's smaller than ½” wide.

4. Are there special brushes for oil paint?

Hog brushes are popular for their toughness, and they hold thick oil paint well, whereas other natural paintbrushes like sables are softer. These form a fine point and are handy for fine detail. Synthetic paintbrushes can be very firm or very soft and feel slicker than hog brushes.
