Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What strings are on a double bass?

A double bass is usually strung with four heavy strings pitched E1–A1–D–G; a fifth string is occasionally added—in jazz band basses, at the top of the register to allow high notes to be played more easily; in symphony orchestra basses, below the E string, tuned to C.

2. Does the double bass have 4 strings?

The double bass, also known simply as the bass (or by other names), is the largest and lowest-pitched bowed (or plucked) string instrument in the modern symphony orchestra (excluding unorthodox additions such as the octobass). Similar in structure to the cello, it has four, although occasionally five, strings.

3. Why do some double basses have 5 strings?

I find the 5 string bass has the following advantages over a C extension: It is easier to finger the notes with the left hand. In fast passages, it takes much longer to reach back on an extension then it does to reach over to the 5th string. It avoids intonation problems caused by releasing and re-closing the E clamp.

4. Why is it called double bass?

The origin of the name of the double bass stems from the fact that its initial function was to double the bass line of large ensembles. 3. This hefty instrument has several nicknames including contrabass, string bass, bass, bass viol, bass fiddle, or bull fiddle.
